with Antje Duvekot, Anne Heaton, Meg Hutchinson, Natalia Zukerman
Singer-songwriters Antje Duvekot, Anne Heaton, Meg Hutchinson and Natalia Zukerman together present a new holiday album (8-song EP) and live show, tailored for this winter season called "Winterbloom: Traditions Rearranged." The four perform in-the-round and together - new arrangements of traditional holiday songs alongside their own originals and special winter/holiday songs they wrote just for this project. Playing on elements of their different backgrounds - German, American, Jewish, Unitarian, Christian, Catholic, Northeastern, Midwestern, Urban, Rural, Religious, Secular, Academic, etc - they celebrate not just religious, but also seasonal caroling and gathering traditions. Witty, intimate, thoughtful, fun.

Frame Drumming Intensive: 6 Month Program
Learn to play the frame drum, the ancient instrument of ritual, trance, community building and healing in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern world. Originally played by women, the small, hand-held tambourine and tar inspire meditative, energizing, and joyous rhythm making when played together in circle. Playing the frame drum can compliment meditative or movement practices, music, dance and percussion jams, and rituals and celebrations or simply add to your personal enjoyment and wellness.
The program’s core techniques and concepts will be derived from the GBTO (Giving Birth To Ourselves) curriculum as taught by Layne Redmond, master percussionist, author, educator and frame drum historian. We will explore and practice the sacred technologies and historical context of this style of drumming as handed down from Layne Redmond, including:
entrainment through rhythm, movement, breath, and voice
• invoking the elemental energies of fire, water, air, and earth
• shifting states of consciousness for meditation and healing
• slideshow presentation of documented frame drum history
Deb and Hollie will infuse the curriculum with their unique professional experiences sharing rhythm and drumming with youth and adults in education, recreation, and mental health recovery settings. Upon completion of this program, participants will have the skills to:
maintain a personal drumming practice for health and wellness
• teach basic frame drumming classes in the community
• facilitate rhythm circles for educational, healing, or workplace settings
Prior drumming experience is not necessary, though it is suggested that participants attend an introductory class prior to attending the program. A commitment of a daily one hour practice at home to maximize and accelerate your learning and playing potential is expected from all participants. Practice CDs and worksheets will be provided (included in cost).
Deb Reed and Hollie Marron began studying the frame drum in 1996 and have been teaching and performing with the frame drum since 1998. They are senior students of Layne Redmond, author of When the Drummers were Women, and bring a light, joyful approach to playing this ecstatic drum! Hollie is an occupational therapist, authorized Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention (REI) provider, and outdoor educator. Deb has a background in rehabilitation counseling and massage therapy; currently she is a doctoral student in audiology at UMass Amherst.

Tickets are $15 and the show begins at 8:15 p.m. For ticket information, please call 617-747-2261, or visit www.berkleebpc.com. Berklee and ROCKRGRL are pleased to welcome WMBR 88.1 FM’s Lost & Found as a media sponsor. For more information, please visit www.berklee.edu/news/2007/01/0125.html.
ROCKRGRL founder Carla DeSantis is set to MC the event, introducing speakers, performers, and a slide show and video chronicling the band’s history. Fanny will accept the award in-person, following a performance by founding members June Millington, Jean Millington, and Alice de Buhr, marking the first Fanny appearance in over 30 years. Other live performances include sets by the Millington sisters’ current group Slammin’ Babes, with Jean’s son Lee Madeloni on drums; a student group from the Berklee Women Musicians Network playing classic Fanny songs; and the winner of Berklee’s Battle of the All-Female Bands, to be named on April 7 [please read on for information about the Battle].
The award will be presented to Fanny by genre-bending guitarist Toshi Reagon. Reagon is a singer, songwriter, and producer living in Brooklyn, New York. She has been touring for the past year in support of her latest CD, Have You Heard, on Righteous Babe Records. Reagon, who is also Music Director of the opera The Temptation Of St. Anthony, counts June Millington as one of her greatest teachers in the areas of guitar playing and production. Guests to speak about Fanny’s importance include 18-year-old singer/songwriter and Velour Records artist Sonya Kitchell, who attended Millington’s Rock n’ Roll Summer Camp for Girls; Berklee Vice President for Cultural Diversity Myra Hindus; and journalist Deborah Frost, who has written for the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Spin, New York Times, and Entertainment Weekly. Carla DeSantis founded ROCKRGRL in 1994 as a serious, intelligent alternative to rock magazines that talked to women musicians about everything but their music. She published the magazine for over 10 years, covering artists like Aimee Mann, Sleater-Kinney, Marianne Faithful, Joan Jett, Liz Phair, The Donnas, and the Indigo Girls to name a few, and in that time produced several events, including two large ROCKRGRL conferences in Seattle, with the goal of promoting, encouraging, and celebrating women's achievements in the music industry.
Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music was through the study and practice of contemporary music. For over 60 years, the college has evolved constantly to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business. With over a dozen performance and nonperformance majors, a diverse and talented student body representing over 70 countries, and a music industry "who's who" of alumni, Berklee is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today and tomorrow.
