Anderson, Jamie autographed CDs

Jamie has been a mainstay of the women’s music scene for years. When it comes to writing about the human condition, Jamie nails it every time, with great sensitivity, lyricism, and musicality. Now, that’s only one side of Jamie: Her comedic skills are just as strong. Most folks might not know that Jamie is an accomplished belly dancer as well. She teaches guitar and songwriting when she’s not on tour, and she also finds time to write for major magazines, too! Here are her donations, many of which are no longer available, so Jamie’s dipped into her personal collection to supply these:
• Three Bridges (signed) – released in 2007
• A Promise of Light (signed) – 2005
• Listen (signed) – 2001
• Drive All Night (signed) – 1999
• Never Assume (signed) – 1995, out of print
• Bad Hair Day (signed) – 1993, out of print
• Closer to Home LP – 1989, out of print
• A Family of Friends – 1993, out of print, compilation that features “At Karen’s House” which is not on any other Anderson CD plus the first version of the song A Family of Friends, with Margie Adam, June and Jean Millington, Tret Fure, Deidre McCalla, Kay Gardner, Cris Williamson and many more.
• Oasis Acoustic Sampler, volume 21 – date unknown, out of print, double CD sampler that includes Anderson’s “Drive All Night” plus songs from Zoe Lewis, Jane Voss and many more.
• Oasis Acoustic Sampler, volume 27 – 2007, may be out of print, limited edition that was never sold, compilation that contains Anderson’s “Drive All Night” as well as songs from others.
• Tammies ’94 – out of print, compilation of winners from the Tucson Area Music Awards (Jamie was voted Best Folk Performer), contains a version of “One Out Of Three” not available anywhere else, plus many other great artists.

Here's what Jamie has to say about IMA: “IMA rocks! And folks and ... supports women and girl musicians in a real and hands-on way. In my book, that's a Great Thing."

Animal (Animal Prufrock)

In addition to musical performance, Animal is also a visual artist. Especially for the IMA Auction, Animal has created a painting in acrylic, oil pastel, and watercolor. The painting is on wood, approximately 2 x 3 feet. It’s a modern piece, featuring a female face in warm tones of yellow, pink, and red. For more information about Animal Prufrock, her music and art, visit her website at www.animalprufrock.com

Baumgardner, Jennifer

Jennifer Baumgardner is an author and activist who served as an editor for Ms. Magazine in the mid-1990s. Her work has also appeared in Harpers, The Nation, Glamour, Elle, and numerous other magazines. She co-authored Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and Politics and Grassroots: A Field Guide for Feminist Activism with Amy Richards, and last year, published Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics.

• Her own personal galley of her book “Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics” autographed. While most of us can buy a hardback or paperback, only a handful of galleys are produced, typically for the author, editors, and perhaps a reviewer.
• A copy of the DVD she co-produced with Gillian Aldrich, “I Had an Abortion” (ending March 18)
• Poster from a lecture given at Mt. Holyoke by Jennifer & Manifesta co-author Amy Richards, autographed by both.

Bowie, David Leather Jacket, autographed

Well, the quote is famous, and the expletives will be deleted, but here’s what David Bowie said about Fanny, the band founded by IMA co-founder June Millington and her sister Jean: “One of the most important female bands in American rock has been buried without a trace: Fanny. They were one of the finest f-ing rock bands of their time. They’re as important as anyone else who’s ever been, ever; it just wasn’t their time. Revivify Fanny. And I will feel that my work is done”

Now that’s some pretty tall praise from one of the world’s most popular and successful artists…for nearly 40 years! David Bowie has great taste in music, and he has great taste in clothes, side musicians, and worthy causes.. To support IMA, he is donating a leather jacket from The Hunger TV taping. He has autographed the jacket. (will describe in greater detail when it arrives first week of March)

Carrington, Terri Lyne Drum accessories, memorabilia Set #1

Terri Lyne is a remarkable talent, so it’s no surprise that she is donating a very exciting collection of items, which is being divided into at least two auctions.

Terri Lyne’s website is at www.terrilynecarrington.com. She was a child prodigy working with the top names in jazz at a very early age. It’s no wonder she’s caught the attention of major jazz and popular music performers.

Cocuzza, Judy (Judy Molish) CDs VHS Tapes, Vater sticks, T-shirts

So Cal drummer Judy Cocuzza has kindly donated CDs from several bands that featured her talents. Perhaps the rarest are those from the now defunct Betty Blowtorch, an in-your-face boundary-exploding all-female hard rock ensemble, also the subject of a documentary. Some of the lyrics and titles are sexually explicit, so this auction would be for adults only. She has also included some great schwag from the Betty Blowtorch days, including bumperstickers and a couple of very hot T-shirts.

DiFranco, Ani Autographed Alvarez acoustic electric (new); personalized autographed copy of Ani’s book of poetry and paintings “Verses”

The woman who helped to redefine “indie music” is donating and autographing a brand new Alvarez RF8C acoustic/electric guitar. This is a cutaway model with a built-in preamp—very sweet tone, both acoustic and amplified and very nicely set up. And even more special is the Ani DiFranco autograph parallel to the bridge…definitely not something you will find at the local guitar store. Wow!! The guitar comes with its original hardshell case and all tags and paperwork. Definitely a great find for the Ani fan.

Ani is also donating a personally autographed copy of her recently released poetry book “Verses.” The book includes Ani’s paintings as well as some new poetry. Ani will sign the book according to the winning bidder’s wishes.

Ani is currently on tour (with Allison Miller..see below) so be sure to catch her show if she’s in town, and by all means visit the website of the record label she created: http://www.righteousbabe.com/

Dorsey, Gail Ann DigiTech RP-10 pedalboard; signed CDs

Most people will recognize Gail Ann as David Bowie and Gwen Stefani’s amazing bassist/vocalist. She has also worked with artists as diverse as Bryan Ferry, The Indigo Girls, and Jane Siberry(Issa). She has also released CD’s of her own work, and proving that her heart is as big as her talent, is contributing these items to IMA:
• Pedalboard used on early Bowie tours and also with Gwen Stefani—It’s a Digitech RP100, in very good condition, with her patches still labeled, and autographed, manual & power supply included.
• 2 Signed CDs “I Used to Be”

More on Gail Ann at www.gailanndorsey.com

Fanny/Millington, June & Jean Framed Photos; memorabilia, s TBD

IMA Co-founder June Millington is a critically acclaimed guitarist/songwriter/music producer who helped to found the groundbreaking all-female rock band Fanny. If you never heard them, you were unfortunately, in the majority, as the music industry didn’t quite know what to make of girls who could play and sing so well. (Remember, this was the early 70s.) But those who did witness Fanny were immediately hooked. Check out David Bowie’s quote, if you need further convincing.

Among the items being contributed is a matted and framed autographed B&W photo set featuring the US members of Fanny—June Millington, Jean Millington, and Alice DeBuhr. This is the only one in existence.

More music memorabilia from these artists is forthcoming, as well as some unusual surprise packages. We’ll update as information and materials arrive! In the meantime, check out this website: http://www.fannyrocks.com/

Ferrick, Melissa Autographed Takamine (hers)

Melissa is donating her beautiful Takamine 1998 Limited Edition “blue moon” model. This is an acoustic/electric guitar. The instrument features a spruce top with Palisandro back and sides. It’s visually stunning—from a rosette handcrafted from abalone and exotic woods to fret markers that mirror the waxing/waning moon. The guitar comes with a gigbag. The guitar has been furnished with new strings, but Melissa’s own old strings will be enclosed with the guitar. It is in very good-to-excellent condition, with only minor scuffing on the top from use and some very minor surface scratches on the sides of the lower bout. The guitar currently is missing the battery compartment door for the preamp, but that has been ordered & hopefully will be replaced prior to auction. There is some fret wear, but there are many hours left before fret job time on this fine instrument, which has retained much of the creative karma of its former owner.

Fure, Tret Italian Dinner and House Concert

Tret is so well known for her sensitive and incisive songwriting and her enormous guitar skills. But she’s also a helluva chef! For the lucky bidder, (restricted to those living within a 3 or 4 hour radius of Madison, WI), Tret will cook a multi-course Italian dinner and then follow it up with an hour-long concert. She has done this quite successfully for the Women in the Arts organization, the driving force behind the National Women’s Music Festival. Tret will be writing the details of this great auction and we’ll update it as soon as we get the text!. More on Tret is at www.tretfure.com

Goldenrod Music Collection of posters

Wow, what an assortment! Everyone from Ani DiFranco to k.d.lang to Enya to Melissa Ferrick to Doria Roberts to Susan Werner to Ubaka Hill to….well, it’s a very long list! Look for these posters offered as collections (i.e., Ember Swift with Ellis with Alix Olson; and a couple of kd lang posters) or interspersed with some of our other donations.

Hackler, Ann women’s music autographed T-shirt original artwork notecards

This is a one-of-a-kind T-shirt with original artwork and autographs from women’s music luminaries. In addition to being IMA’s Executive Director, Ann is a visual & musical artist in her own right. She contributes this self-designed T-shirt featuring her artwork of a woman playing cello (like Ann!) with this quote from Virginia Woolf: “If newspapers were written by people whose sole object in writing was to tell the truth about politics and the truth about art, we should not believe in war, and we should believe in art.”

The front of the T-shirt features the word “BELIEVE”on the front pocket and

autographs from women’s music celebrities such as Mary Watkins, the late Kay Gardner, Cris Williamson, Tret Fure, Margie Adam, Robin Flower, Libby McLaren, Nancy Vogl, Deidre Mccalla, June Millington, and Jean Millington. This item is one of our most precious as there is only ONE in existence, and it can never be re-created.

Ann has also donated several sets of notecards featuring renderings of her original artwork. Each package is banded with a paper collage and a note.

Indigo Girls/Amy Ray handwritten notes/lyric sheets, autographed CD

Every now & then, an Indigo Girl fan might come up on an autographed CD. But very rarely will anyone have access to these personal Indigo Girls items provided by Amy Ray and Emily Saliers to benefit IMA:
• Amy Ray’s handwritten lyrics/notes to “Starkville” signed by both Emily & Amy. This battered sheet of paper with blue ink scrawls in Amy’s own hand tells the story of songcraft, as ideas and images flow into lyric and verse.
• Emily Saliers’ original chord and vocal harmony notes for Get Out The Map, also signed by both Emily & Amy The lyrics are typed, but the chords are handwritten (and scratched out & rewritten)
• Special Promo CD release of “Cold Beer and Remote Control” autographed by Emily & Amy

Jones, Leslie Ann Jane Fonda Workout Record GOLD record

Have you ever wished you had a gold record? Will now you can own the real deal! This is a genuine RIAA gold record, presented to Leslie Ann Jones for her work on Jane Fonda’s Workout Record in the early 80s. The gold record is framed with a gold painted frame and plexiglass– approximately 20 ½ inches by 16 ½ inches. There are some scratches and scuffs on both the plexiglass and the wooden frame.

Many people may recognize the name of Leslie Ann Jones, but for those who don’t…not only has she produced/engineered many albums by women’s music performers, she is the Director of Scoring and Music Recording at Skywalker Sound Studios in Marin, CA, one of the preeminent sound recording facilities in the world. She began her career back in the 70s, where a woman sound engineers were rare to nonexistent. Her work has been featured in many films you recognize, such as Forrest Gump and Mrs. Doubtfire, as well as Star Wars: Phantom Menace, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound. She has also served as a guest instructor for some of IMA summer intensives for girls—lucky girls! Read more about Leslie Ann Jones at Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_Ann_Jones

Her’s what Leslie has to say about the Gold Record

Working with Jane Fonda on her first "Workout Record" was a dream come true. I had admired Jane as a peace activist and a humanist for a long time, and to be able to record and mix her first recording was a great pleasure. To get a Gold Record (symbolizing the sale of over 500,000 units) was the icing on the cake. I am happy to donate this Gold Record to IMA's auction as I think it symbolizes self confidence, a strong work ethic, the opportunity to try something new, and a safe place for experimentation. And coincidentally those are the same things IMA provides to the girls and young women who participate in their programs. I can't think of a better place to spend a few weeks each summer.”

Kaitlin, Calafus/Vater Percussion autographed sticks new sticks

Caitlin Kalafus is an amazing 15-year-old drummer who has earned tens of thousands of hits on YouTube for her impressive solo-ing. She has also earned an award as the World’s Fastest Drummer through a competition at a music show in California, where she landed 799 bass drum kicks in one minute. (don’t try this at home!) Through her endorsement with Vater Percussion, Caitlin is donating several sets of autographed drumsticks—some signed by very well-known drummers. She also coordinated the donation of several sets of brand new sticks from Vater

• 5A Hickory drumstick brick … some autographed by Caitlin Kalafus, 5A Hickory drumstick brick, unopened, unautographed (ending March 18)
• Pair of Vater sticks, autographed by Steward Copeland, drummer for The Police
• Pair of Vater sticks, autographed by Virgil Donati
• Pair of Vater sticks, autographed by Atlanta alt rock band Sevendust

Kavars, Linda/Kate Millet autographed print

Just in to the IMA museum is this historic signed print by the lesbian/feminist author and artist Kate Millet. This is a gift from Linda Kavars, an early associate/manager of June and Jean Millington’s band Fanny. The poster is in red and blue and pictures a woman’s breast and belly button. The poster is entitled Kate Millet: Gallerie DeVille, New Orleans; January 31 through February 14, 1980. Kate Millet’s book Sexual Politics inspired the second wave of feminism. Here’s what Linda has to say about IMA & its co-founders:

I have known June since the sixties when we chased the same dream together for a few years. Even though we went our separate ways, our paths have kept on crossing through the years. So I know firsthand how hard June works and how determined and committed she is. It was a blessing that she met Ann and together they have done wonderful and important work. They have sacrificed and stayed focused and never gave up on their dream. It has all resulted in the paradise they have created at IMA…what an opportunity for young women musicians. WE couldn’t have imagined a place like this when we started out. I am happy to contribute and help in any way I can to keep this dream alive.”

Kitchell, Peter Original watercolor painting

Peter Kitchell has been a successful abstract artist since the late 70s and is one of the world’s most recognized artists! He is graciously donating a work of art to the IMA Auction. Peter’s description: This Peter Kitchell watercolor is called "Cowsual Enterprise", Painted from the back of a bicycle in it's original form. Later repainted in his studio in Rincon, PR. Painted in 1997 at 40" x 42". One of the best of the Puerto Rico series of stretched watercolors. This piece is stretched and mounted on a very sturdy backer with a clear lacquer coating to allow mounting without a frame or glass. Winsor Neuton watercolors and Arches paper. Signed by artist front and back. This is not a poster, this is an original.”

Peter has shown in solo exhibitions throughout the US and in Japan and has exhibited in numerous group shows as well. He has worked on commission with a number of commercial clients. Please visit his website to learn more about his work—www.peterkitchell.com

Kitchell, Sonya—TBD

Sonya is one young performer whose star is rising with exponential speed. Her supple and smoky voice graces the Grammy award winning album-of-the-year by Herbie Hancock. Her own work has garnered rave reviews….and you know when you’re selected as a featured artists by Starbucks, you’re either legendary…or, about to be. By the way, Sonya Kitchell just turned 19. And yes, her father is the artist Peter Kitchell. Donations TBD.

Kunkel, Leah Peter Fox Italian made Red ankle boots

Coyote Sister and fabulous vocalist Leah Kunkel donates her vintage Peter Fox ankle boots. These shoes so rock! And besides being a perfect fashion statement, they’ve trod the hallowed boards of Carnegie Hall. Worn on tour with Art Garfunkel in the late 70s, these shoes are as timeless as Leah’s voice. In addition to Art Garfunkel, Leah’s voice has embellished work by James Taylor, Livingston Taylor, Stephen Bishop, and Arlo Guthrie, among others. She and two colleagues formed The Coyote Sisters back in 1980 and sold 70,000 albums. As a duo, The Coyote Sisters released a CD in 2001.

Larkin, Patty, autographed CDs and poster

Patty Larkin is an IMA kind of talent, always exploring, always finding new ways to

express her considerable storytelling and musical skills. She’s an inventive guitarist, perhaps using a child’s violin bow to play her baritone guitar, or detuning a lap steel guitar and playing it percussively with her hand or drumsticks. She’s sending along some autographed CDs and a poster for one lucky bidder to enjoy.

Lichter, Emily autographed by Erin McKeown Martin backpacker

Emily Lichter is also known as Public Emily, the name of her artist management and media representation company. She represents singer/songwriter Erin McKeown who has autographed a sweet little Martin backpacker guitar. These are travelin’ instruments, meant to be enjoyed when you don’t have the space for a full-sized guitar. Emily represents some of your favorite performers and works closely with IMA. Visit her website at www.publicemily.com More on Erin McKeown is available at www.erinmckeown.com. The Backpacker itself comes a nice gigbag and it has a great tone for such a small instrument.

Linq Vintage Hagstrom Electric Guitar (hers)

LinQ is a Massachusetts-based singer/songwriter with a penchant for skewering the status quo with lyrics and music. (www.linqmusic.com) She is donating a prized left-handed guitar that she custom-ordered back in the mid-60s. Here’s LinQ’s description:

It's a Hagstrom III (F-300) solid body guitar that I had special ordered for me in a left-handed version circa 1966. It's in excellent condition, and comes with a tiger-striped lined case. Hagstrom is a Swedish company that started manufacturing electric guitars in 1958. They discontinued production in 1983 and just started manufacturing them again in 2006. From their new website

(www.hagstromguitars.com): The first Hagstrom Deluxe solid body guitars featured a distinctive sparkle and pearloid celluloid finish, an ingenious repurposing of materials previously used in their accordion production line. When Hagstrom ceased production in 1983, the guitars became instant collectors items, and the love and repect for these fine instruments continues to be celebrated by musicians around the world.”

Vintage Hagstroms have earned a worldwide cult following, and lefty guitars are especially rare. This will be a fun one to watch.

Madeloni, Marita portrait of Earl Slick

A stunning and compelling photo from Slick’s daughter (Jean Millington’s daughter; June Millington’s niece), has been rendered onto canvas and finished with a gallery wrap. Marita and husband Glenn have started their own photography business in Northern California, www.madeloniphotography.com, and the Slick piece is representative of the talent of these up-and-coming artists. As of this writing, Slick is expected to donate a smaller version of this portrait, autographed.

Drummer Allison Miller’s name might often be attached to a performer she’s worked with: Ani DiFranco, Natalie Merchant, Norah Jones, Melissa Ferrick, Toshi Reagon, Mimi Fox, Alix Olson, and Betty (and have you listened to ‘The L Word” lately??), but she is an artist in her own right as well, releasing her own CDs. Trull, Teresa autographed Ibanez Acoustic Electric Guitar

Teresa is donating a sweet Ibanez AE 410BK acoustic/electric guitar used during the recording of Country Blessed with Cris Williamson back in 1989. The guitar is solid black with white binding on the body, with what appears to be wood or tortoise shell purfling in between the binding rows—very sexy looking (and sounding) instrument. The guitar is a cutaway with a soundhole and a very thin profile, so it’s very comfortable to hold. There are some surface scratches from strumming and picking on the top, and some ‘belt rash’ in the back from rubbing on clothing. There is a bit of string buzz on the bass E string, but a guitar tech should be able to take care of that. The guitar comes with a hardshell case, complete with the airline tags from its last road trip. Teresa has left a handwritten note in there stating “This guitar was used to record some of the unique guitar sounds on “Country Blessed” (Teresa Trull and Cris Williamson, 1989—It was lovingly played by Paul Davis AKA “Chainsaw” who died in 2007. Play it with love and in his memory. Love, Teresa Trull.”

Williams, Dar Autographed Guitar (hers)

This is lengthy, as the info will be important to guitar collectors. This instrument is pure eye candy right out of the case, and it only gets better when one plays it. This is a highly prized Huss and Dalton OM model, with extensive upgrades, including an abalone inlay rosette and abalone inlay around the top of the guitar, including the bottom of the fretboard; slotted head; Waverly tuners. Preamp is onboard and powered with a 9 volt battery. Snowflake fret markers grace an ebony fretboard, and the action & neck shape are conducive to playing all night long. The guitar has a spruce top and it appears to be an Indian rosewood body (not a wood expert, but I don’t believe it’s Brazilian!) Now about the tone—heavenly! The balance among bass-mids-highs is as good as it gets…a most articulate guitar with clarity we humans can only envy. The guitar is in excellent condition, especially considering it was a road warrior along with a hard-working musician. It’s set up for fingerstyle and light plectrum, so if the winner likes to play harder, a trip to the guitar shop would be in order. The ONLY issue? There is some very light surface scratching on the rear of lower bout, probably from rubbing against clothing during use. The tweed case has scuffs, scratches wear and tears, consistent with its purpose—to protect the valuable instrument inside. The handle will probably need some repair in the near future.

Dar has autographed the guitar and included a handwritten note about the history of the instrument: “Thank you for supporting IMA by bidding on this guitar! I’ve had the honor of watching teenage girls really rocking out, breaking through all barriers & limitations and lo and behold, being accepted. What June and Co. are doing is allowing these revolutionary acts to happen all year every year. This guitar has been with me since 2000. I got it on the Green World Tour in Lawrence, Kansas. Sorry for the side-winded stirngs. Hopefully the tone of the guitar will make up for that. Best Wishes, Dar Williams”

Good thing Dar shipped this sweetheart guitar to North Carolina: If this instrument had been shipped to Goshen, June would never let it leave!!

Williamson, Cris strumstick, memorabilia

Cris Williamson is one of women’s music most recognized performers, breaking through in the mid-70s with the legendary album Changer and the Changed. While Cris has earned iconic status, there’s been no basking in the glow for her, as Cris’s songwriting gift has drawn audiences close for more than 35 years. Cris is donating a brand new Strumstick, (ending March 18) which she has autographed on the back (and it sounds so cool!!) You can hear her playing this instrument on her latest CD Fringe. The instrument comes in a well-padded heavy duty nylon (like luggage material) case.

Additionally, Cris is donating a signed, framed Ms. Magazine cover from 1980, when she was featured on the cover, along with Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart. Also, look for one more Cris auctions: one, for two framed album covers—the groundbreaking “Changer” LP cover, autographed by Cris, as well as a ‘pre-Changer’ Cris Williamson album re-released by Olivia, also autographed.
